Description: "The group of cottages seen in the plate is the Village of Dalby situated between Port Erin and Peel Castle. It is too secluded to participate much of the benefit of enlightened science or improved customs. The inhabitants have little connection with the more polished Towns of the Island except for litigatory purposes, or in subservience to the profits from the fisheries - the fish taken from Dalby Bay are superior to all others in flavour and plumpness. The people are very few degrees removed from the aboriginal colonists of the Celtic tribes when first drawn or driven towards the Island. The state and appearance of Dalby has, in fact, undergone no material change. The buildings, called cottages, are little better than hovels, or the kraels of savages, and all the features of society are blended under the law of a similar wildness and ignorance." (T. This mounted lithographic view is part of Sarah Jametta Crigan's sketchbook. The lithograph is cut from T. Ashe's sketchbook, 1825 (the series engraved by Haghe) annotated in the same hand and ink as signature on cover (1825). Sarah Jametta was the daughter of Claudius Crigan (Bishop of Sodor and Man 1784-1813) and author of 'Memoirs of Major Charles Crigan' (her brother) published in 1864.
