Description: “In company with a Gentleman and two interesting young ladies we with some little difficulty found out the generative Spring [St Maughold's Well] and fearlessly drank. It rises on the side of a very steep hill whence one false step might precipitate the unwary traveller into the Billows which roll beneath him.” (Samuel Dukinfield Swarbreck, Tour through the Isle of Man by Captain William Latham, July 1815, M 07398)
The painting is from a series of works by Mrs Lucy Emma Lynam, born 1834. It is thought that Lucy Emma Lynam painted the works while staying with her daughter and son-in-law on the Isle of Man. Her daughter, also called Lucy Emma, married a Manxman Sidney Alfred Pizey Kermode, who was the Reverend of Onchan (1862-1925).
