Description: 'Elizabeth Caine her work aged 13 years 1845' (spiral).
Fine crewel wool (bright red, green, 2 greenish blues, orange, brown, purple and pink) on linen. 43:2.5cm. Hemmed onto wrong side. Designs include a strawberry band and a foliate band in both red and green.
Verse: Flanked, to right, by strawberry tree, with 2 hearts separated by a rectilinear motif above.
Jesus permit they gracious name to stand
As the first effort of an infant's hand
A ... as my fingers sore the sampler rove
E ...age my tender heart to seek thy love.
Inscription.
Central flower pot flanked by orange and apple trees, two standing figures and a total of 19 small motifs and '5' in red. Single line of green forms border.
The verse is a great sampler favourite. Elizabeth Caine, of Ballacorlett, Kirk Michael, married into the Joughin family.
This object is said by the donor to have been worked by a member of the Joughin family of Thurot Cottage, Bride (but only related by marriage).
