Watercolour by Archibald Knox
Date made: c.1932
Artist: Knox, Archibald
Description: A very muted but atmospheric watercolour landscape by Archibald Knox (1864-1933) of billowing dark clouds and a small cottage by a stream and a footbridge. The artwork is much smaller than the usual size of Knox's landscape paintings and it was identified by the donor's uncle as having been "the last picture he (Knox) painted'. Although small in scale, the cottage is an important element of the painting. Farm buildings and mills were a popular (and challenging) topic for Knox as he tried to capture what was essentially a 'white box' and attempted to give them volume and make them 3 dimensional on the paper.
