Log Cabin Quilt
Date made: late 19th century
Description: Velvet and silk log cabin patchwork quilt.
The log cabin squares are arranged so as to produce a pattern of alternating light and dark stars or diamonds. The individual squares have been made with thin strips of fabric resulting in very fine log cabin squares. The 10 cm squares have light coloured sateen fabrics on one side and darker, heavier velvet fabrics on the other.
The quilt is backed with a tan sateen fabric and is edged with tan coloured cording. It is machine-quillted in a series of straight lines forming a grid pattern of large squares in brown cotton thread. The quilt contains an unbleached blanket as wadding.
