Woollen Wholecloth Quilt

Date made: c.1860

Description: A woollen wholecloth quilt with a dark blue flannel top backed with an unbleached cream flannel wholecloth.

The quilt is hand-quilted with a brown woollen thread which appears dark on the reverse. The wholecloth is hand-quilted in a diamond trellis pattern without any wadding or filling.

The material used to make the quilt was woven about 1860 in Cregneash by William Taubman. He used thread spun by his wife using wool from his own flock of sheep at Spanish Head. The quilt was donated to the Manx Museum in exchange for new blankets.

There are three William Taubmans shown on the 1861 census living at Cregneash. The most likely maker of this item is aged 57, a weaver and fisherman, living with his wife and two sons (both also fishermen). All were born in Rushen.
