Berrag bronze sword
Date made: 1000 BC
Description: This is a three thousand year old sword, made from bronze and found near Jurby. It was double-edged and would have been used in a hacking and thrusting movement.
The handle would originally have been covered in wood and the holes can still be seen where the rivets would have attached the wood.
Swords like this were the earliest objects designed deliberately and solely to inflict injury on another living thing. Towards the end of the Bronze Age, society was becoming more unsettled as competition grew for better land. This sword may have been used in battles rather than just being for show.
