Bradda Hoard Athelred II Coin

Date made: Viking: 800-1265

Description: Only seven coins survive of a hoard of hundreds of Anglo-Saxon coins found together in a "sort of roll" by a labourer. Many were reportedly sold to a watch-maker who melted them down for the silver!

This coin was originally thought to be from the Ballaquayle Hoard, but Michael Dolley suggested that the Bradda Head Hoard is the most probable provenance based on the type and poor condition of the coin, as well as the dark, powdery blue-tone patination which is consistent with known Bradda coins.

The inscription on this coin is;

*York(?) (E). Lefæine (Leofwine)
