Hexagon Quilt
Date made: early-mid 19th century
Description: Unfinished hexagonal patchwork quilt comprising English-style pieced patchwork.
The hexagons (6 cm in size) still have their papers tacked in place. The papers are a series of early 19th-century handwritten bills and receipts. The quilt is made of a variety of fabrics including silk, satin, brocade, velvet and damask. Alongside the neutral colours are yellow, burgundy reds, purple and mauve. Floral material and a peacock feather eye patterned fabric are used throughout the panel.
The dress and skirt fabrics come from high-quality clothes with the range of fabrics and colours suggesting that this quilt was made and belonged to a wealthy household. This is a highly decorative quilt rather than being strictly utilitarian, especially when one considers the time and labour required to make it.
