Silver watch in silver case by Jno. Atkinson, London

Date made: 18th century

Maker: Atkinson, John

Description: Silver watch in silver case, by Jno. Atkinson, London 1762/3.

This watch belonged to Charles Cook, shepherd of Bishop's Court Demesne circa 1840 and was probably passed to a son who went to Cleveland, Ohio, and carried the watch with him through the American Civil War. On his death the watch was bequeathed with other items to the donor. Maker may be identical with John Atkinson, watchmaker of Douglas.

Charles Cooke, a shepherd resident in Bishop's Domain (sic), Ballaugh appears on the 1841 Census. He was aged 41 and born in England. He had four sons, Charles (aged 16), Thomas (aged 14), William (aged 12) and Edward (aged 1) all born in the Isle of Man. It is almost certain that he passed the watch to one of his sons. There are soldiers named Thomas, William and Edward Cooke on the Ohio United States Civil War database, all possible candidates. In addition there is a William Cook born in the Isle of Man on the 1860 US census, living in Illinois, although the age does not appear to match.
