Snaefell miner's lantern

Description: This lantern belonged to Robert Corlett, who worked for most of his life in the Snaefell Mine. He used the lantern to light his way on dark mornings over the tops on his way from his home at Ballafrog near Sulby.
The lantern is a simple affair, probably home made and holding a candle.
One of the extra ordinary aspects of the lives of the miners who laboured in the Manx mines were the large distances many of them walked, before they had even started work. Corlett would leave home at 5am in time to start a 7am shift, coming up from the mine at 2pm and repeating the journey homewards. For this he earned three shillings per day.
