Cross Slab at Port y Vullen "Crux Guriat"

Date made: c.1815

Description: "To me the stone gives the impression of its having been a wayside cross or ‘girthstane’ as they have been called in Scotland…to guide pilgrims [and] to remind them of the duties of prayer and penance.” (Dr Robert Paterson, Manx Antiquities, 1863, M 02321)

On the sketch is written: "Memorandum sketch of an ancient monument placed on a bank on the roadside near Port Voillen about midway between Maughold and Ramsey Isle of Man. This stone is 6ft high 3ft wide 5 inches thick with 5 raised balls upon it. Will Latham, c.1815."

Sketch by Captain William Latham of Liverpool. In July 1815 Captain William Latham made a tour of the Isle of Man with Mr William Gerard Walmesley Esq of Liverpool, Mr James Leigh of Liverpool and Mr Ralph Greenough of Wigan. Latham made many sketches of the Island during his visit.
