The Deer's Cry (St Patrick's Hymn)

Date made: 1914-1933

Artist: Knox, Archibald

Description: The Deer's Cry (Faed Fiada) or St Patrick's Hymn is an illuminated version of the prayer traditionally ascribed to St Patrick. Consisting of a series of pages of illuminated lettering bound into a book; The Deer's Cry was designed and executed by Archibald Knox (1864-1933). This outstanding work illustrates his skilled use of design taken from Norse and Celtic art. Knox is known to have worked on The Deer's Cry during the First World War, when he was in post as a camp censor at Knockaloe Internment Camp on the Isle of Man. Knox then continued to work intermittently on The Deer's Cry until his death in February 1933.

Hello Gemma Black. There was a reprint for MNH in 1983, but it is no longer available. You may be able to find it on a second hand book site such as Abe Books. The details are Knox, Archibald; Cubbon, Marshall A. [foreword]. You can also come into the Manx Museum Archives and Library to see the manuscript. (Best to contact the library beforehand to check opening hours and access). - Emma. Digital Collections Assistant Report this
