Long case clock made by John Muncaster of Douglas

Date made: early 19th century

Maker: Muncaster, John

Description: This long case clock, or grandfather lock, was made by John Muncaster of Douglas. The clock stands 220cm in height and is made of oak. It still contains the original pendulum. It is one of the most beautiful clocks in our collection. The face has Roman numerals, brass fingers, a 'second' dial, and date dial. Decorations include four roses, one at each corner, the moon and globe on either side. It was formerly on display in the T.E. Brown Room at the Manx Museum.

Between 1790 and 1850 there were more than forty individuals who conducted clock and watch making businesses in the Isle of Man. These types of pendulum clocks were the world's most accurate timekeeping technology, and long case clocks, due to their superior accuracy, served as time standards for households and businesses.
