Old Kirk Braddan
Date made: n.d.
Description: “Walked on to the old church, Kirk Braddan; handsome steeple. Burial-ground beautifully shaded, and full of tombstones. Sought poor Mary Crump's but in vain - sat in the shade till we were quite refreshed.” (Dorothy Wordsworth, Journal of a Tour in the Isle of Man 1828, M 10561)
The painting is from a series of works by Mrs Lucy Emma Lynam, born 1834. It is thought that Lucy Emma Lynam painted the works while staying with her daughter and son-in-law on the Isle of Man. Her daughter, also called Lucy Emma, married a Manxman Sidney Alfred Pizey Kermode, who was the Reverend of Onchan (1862-1925).
