Glen Wyllin
Date made: 1855
Description: "Kirkmichael – which little town and neighbourhood, including the rural village of Glenwillan..are among the most beautiful spots in the island; especially the neat fishing hamlet just alluded to – for so it is at present, consisting merely of a few fishermen’s houses in the bosom of the glen – is entitled to that distinction. I have no doubt...ere the lapse of many years, this situation will be chosen as the site of a watering-place, and a point of summer resort." (Sir George Head, A Home Tour of Various Parts of the United Kingdom, 1837, M 02445)
Miss Georgina Gore Currie was the niece of Horatio Powys, Bishop of Sodor and Man from 1854 to 1877. Georgina stayed with the Bishop’s family at their residence, Bishopscourt, north of Kirk Michael. During her time on the Isle of Man, Georgina sketched and painted many Manx scenes including Bishopscourt and its gardens.
