Cotton Framed Medallion Quilt

Date made: 19th century

Description: A cotton framed medallion patchwork quilt with a large central square partly bordered by a square of heavier red fabric. This red fabric may be furnishing fabric and appears, as it partially covers an earlier frayed and worn red fabric, to have been added after the quilt was originally made. Although generally geometric in design the borders around the central square are irregular. The fabric patches are not uniformly square or rectangular with some patches half-moon shaped and appliquéd in pale pink cotton. This pale pink cotton fabric is used in other areas where the fabric is badly worn possibly added later as a reinforcement. The quilt is pale pink and white with a limited number of soft greens and blues. A variety of fabric patterns are used including plain, sprig pattern, floral, spotted and striped.

The quilt is backed with white cotton or fine linen sheeting sewn together from several pieces. A zig-zag quilting pattern is evident on some of the central pieces though the backing has been patched and repaired several times. The quilt edges are hand-stitched with white cotton thread.
