English-style Pieced Panel

Date made: late 19th century-early 20th century

Maker: Member of McKneale Family

Description: Tumbling block patchwork panel.

An unfinished patchwork panel of English-style pieced patchwork with some of the cardboard templates still stitched in place. The diamond shapes are arranged in a tumbling blocks pattern. The patchwork is predominantly made of silks (including several pieces from ties) together with brocades, velvets and a mixture of patterned, plain and textured fabrics. The dominant colour is black with each block made up of a black, mid-tone and lightly coloured diamond, creating the three dimensional effect of tumbling blocks.

The panel, though never finished, appears to have been intended as a cushion cover.

This panel is thought to have been made by the donor's aunt, who was a member of the McKneale family; see also the three legs design quilt, IOMMM: 1960-0145.
