Description: Framed certificate and medal, presented circa 1960 to veterans of the 1940 Dunkirk campaign, by the town of Dunkirk. Printed text 'LA VILLE DE DUNKERQUE'. Certificate hand named to 'Arthur James Allen Merchant Navy'. Allen was a Donkeyman aboard SS Tynwald and was Mentioned in Dispatches for his part in the evacuation of the BEF from Dunkirk, May/June 1940. The term Donkeyman was originally used for the sailor who looked after the Donkey Engine (an auxiliary steam engine) but by the Second World War generally referred to the petty officer in charge of the engine room ratings.
