Framed Roll of Honour scroll from Salisbury Street Methodist Church
Date made: early 20th century
Maker: unknown
Description: During the First World War, churches became focal points for local communities, providing practical support in the form of parcels for troops at the front, as well as emotional support for the families of soldiers and sailors at home. Many churches kept a Roll of Honour such as this in a prominent place, reflecting the pride of their congregation. Subtly different from war memorials, these scrolls were compiled whist the war was in progress, and were added to as more men went to the front. Those who had been killed were identified by a black box around the name. This Roll of Honour remained in Salisbury Street church until it closed in 2009.
