Fragments of Peel Castle stained glass (West window)

Date made: late 16th century

Description: Unframed collection of ten pieces or fragments of painted stained glass said to be from the Great or West window of Peel Cathedral (Peel Castle). Panel contains glass panels with painted figures, thought to be Dutch or Flemish in design and dating from the late 16 or 17 century.

The exact history of the glass remains unclear. It is claimed that the glass was originally from the Cathedral at Peel Castle, was removed and transferred to the Bishop of Trondheim, returned by the Bishop of Trondheim to Bishop Crigan (Bishop of Sodor & Mann) at some point between 1784 and 1813 and then was transferred by some means to Sir James Gell who deposited the glass at the 'Manx Museum' at Castle Rushen (possibly in his capacity as a Church Commissioner) in the late 19th century. The glass was displayed at Castle Rushen and then brought to the Manx Museum, Douglas (probably sometime during the restoration of Castle Rushen c.1990-91).
