Clock presented by BMW to Georg Auerbacher

Date made: 1969

Description: A Kienzle automatic clock with an atlas of the world as its face, showing time zones around the world. Mounted on brass/gilt fittings. Engraved on the reverse. Presented by BMW to West German rider Georg Auerbacher in recognition of his achievement in coming second in the 1968 sidecar world championship. Auerbacher was an Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT) competitor between 1962 and 1972. The donor was his mechanic and also the vendor of sidecar 2018-0001 (also in MNH collection).

BMW would have been particularly pleased with Auerbacher's performance in 1968, because after years of dominance of the world championship, in that year their crown was snatched by rival and former BMW works rider Helmut Fath aboard his self-built URS outfit. Auerbacher was therefore the most successful BMW rider of 1968.

Kienzle were the most prominent German clock makers of the mid-20th century. Other examples of this clock are known to have been presented as motor racing prizes in the 1960s.
