George Dumbell’s roll top desk

Date made: c.1850

Maker: Gardener of Canonbury Place

Description: This imposing desk once belonged to George Dumbell, one of the most important Manx businessmen of the 19th century. The desk was used by him at his home, 'Belmont', just outside Douglas.

The desk was made by Gardener of Canonbury Place, London. It has a roll top and can be dismantled into five parts.

A lawyer by profession, George Dumbell was actually born in Wales but became heavily involved in commerce on the Isle of Man. He became chairman of the Great Laxey Mining company and it was his investment which led to the construction of the Great Laxey Wheel. He was also involved in banking and founded Dumbell's Bank. When this venture eventually crashed, it caused much hardship on the Island.
