Hexagon Quilt
Date made: 1880-1885
Maker: Cain, Elizabeth Jane
Description: English-style pieced hexagon patchwork quilt made of variously coloured and patterned cotton dress fabrics with a border of green and violet striped shirting. Although most of the hexagons are randomly positioned in regards to colour and pattern, some form a rosette or 'Grandmother's Garden' pattern. The dominant colours are pink, pale blue and pale green, together with white, navy, mauve and red. The patterns are mainly stripes, with some plain, floral, checked, paisley and pictorial patterns.
The quilt is backed with white cotton sheeting and machine-quilted with white cotton thread. The quilting is made of horizontal and vertical lines forming a large grid pattern. The quilt is lightweight and does not contain any filling.
The quilt was made by Mrs Elizabeth Jane Cain nee Gell at the time of her marriage around 1880-5.
