The Guard Room, Peel Castle
Date made: August 1822
Description: “They say, that an apparition called, in their language, the Mauthe Doog, in the shape of a large black Spaniel with curled shaggy hair, was used to haunt Peel Castle; and has been frequently seen in every room, but particularly in the Guard Chamber, where, as soon as candles were lighted, it came and lay down before the fire in the presence of all the soldiers.” (Waldron, The History and Description of the Isle of Man, 1726, M 00733)
A note on the sketch states: "Sketch of the entrance into the Soldier's Guard Room, Peel Castle, Isle of Man" and "Sketch of the hole near the Soldier's Guard Room, Peel Castle Isle of Man, through which the Moddy Dhoo made its figress and ingress."
Sketch by Captain William Latham of Liverpool. In July 1815 Captain William Latham made a tour of the Isle of Man with Mr William Gerard Walmesley Esq of Liverpool, Mr James Leigh of Liverpool and Mr Ralph Greenough of Wigan. Latham made many sketches of the Island during his visit.
