HMS Racehorse Belt-plate

Date made: 1800s

Description: This is a brass belt-plate from a Royal Marines Uniform. It has a motif of a fouled and anchor and importantly, a crown. It was one of the earlier types of belt-plate worn shortly after the Marines became the Royal Marines.

It was raised from the wreck of HMS Racehorse which sank in 1822 of Langness on the south east coast of the Isle of Man. There were a number of Royal Marines on board the ship when she hit rocks and began to break up. None were lost.
