Microscope used by Theophilus Talbot

Date made: 1854

Description: Microscope in wooden case, owned by botanist, Theophilus Talbot. Brass plate on door 'Presented by the Members of the Trinity Young Men's Christian and Literary Society to their president the Rev theophilus Talbot, Liverpool, March xxvii,mdcccliv'. Brass microscope with no maker's name. Removed from Museum Assistant's room May 1969. Assume used by Museum staff prior to 1969.

Rev Theophilus Talbot died in 1908. In his obituary in the IOM Examiner 14 March he was described as "probably the highest authority on questions of Manx history and archaeology, and he was frequently occupied in exposing errors made by writers on these subjects. Indeed it must be admitted that Mr talbot ruthlessly destroyed some of the most cherished Manx traditions."

He was ordained by Bishop Powys in 1869, then Curate of German and Chaplain of St Olaves, Ramsey. He not long afterwards however retired to Douglas where he devoted himself to his studies.
