Fire surround from Baillie Scott fireplace
Date made: 1900
Maker: Scott, Mackay Hugh Baillie
Description: Hugh Mackay Baillie Scott was born in Ramsgate in 1865 and trained as an architect. After his marriage in 1889 he moved to the Isle of Man, where he lived until 1901. Baillie Scott practiced as an architect and a number of the buildings which he designed are still extant, but he was also interested in interior design and was a contemporary of Rennie Mackintosh. Later he worked with Archibald Knox and was influential in the Art Nouveau movement. This fireplace came from Glen Falcon House, which was purchased from the Okell Trustees in 1948 and demolished shortly afterwards to facilitate the widening of Broadway.
The fire surround or chimney breast screen is made of beaten copper with a stylised rose or flower motif.
