The name Mabelreign survives in Zimbabwe as the name of a school founded under British rule by Manx emigrant Edward Walter Kermode - known as Ned - he had an adventurous life. In his young days he went to the USA . He shot bison for the UInion Pacific Railroad, rode with Buffalo Bill Cody, and also served alongside George Armstrong Custer but parted company before the Little Bighorn Campaign. Later he was an associate of Cecil Rhodes and Frederic Selous (founder of the Selous Scouts, later Rhodesian SAS) in the founding of Rhodesia.

The name suposedly refers to his son, and derives from 'maybe he will reign'.
