Long Case Clock

Description: Grandfather clock by W. Clucas, Castletown. Painted face with four symbolic figures (Africa Asia etc possibly) in corners and twin towered castle at top. Case 0.52 metres wide, 1.39 metres to base of dial. Painted dial with phases of the Moon: Allegorical portraits flanking dial appear to be Europe, India, America and Africa Maker: William Clucas.

Between 1790 and 1850 there were more than forty individuals who conducted clock and watch making businesses in the Isle of Man. These types of pendulum clocks were the world's most accurate timekeeping technology, and long case clocks, due to their superior accuracy, served as time standards for households and businesses.
