Miss Christian Taubman
Date made: 1781
Artist: Romney, George
Description: Miss Christian Taubman (later Mrs Christian Cunninghame).
Painted in 1781 by leading London portrait artist George Romney (1734-1802). The National Art Collection contains a number of portraits of the major social figures of the day. Miss Christian Taubman (1753-1832) was a member of the influential 18th century Taubman family who lived at the Nunnery mansion on the outskirts of Douglas. She was the sister of Major John Taubman and married Colonel W. Cunninghame in 1791.
The painting was captured during one of her stays in their London residence, demonstrating the more cosmopolitan aspect of Manx society life. She was 28 at the time of the sitting.
