Toy Bricks

Date made: 19th century

Description: Toy, home-made wooden building bricks made between 1790 and 1860 at Ballamenaugh, Lonan (Mylchreest family) 2.4 cm cubes.

Ann Quayle (b.1829/ Malew), married William Mylchreest of Ballamenagh Mooar, Lonan (1800-1860) in 1855 and married Henry Wesley Bell of Douglas (1827-1890) in 1879. Ann Mylchreest owned Ballaharra (part of late husband's estates) and the Great Clay Case/ Ballaharra Clay Case was taken to the Chancery Court, Castletown (1867) and to the Privy Council, London to uphold the right of Manx customary freeholders to the clay and sand deposits under their farms - a right which had been challenged by the British Crown (who lost their case).
