Date made: 19th century

Description: Toy wooden building blocks, nineteenth century, probably German in original wooden box with picture on sliding lid (box slightly damaged). The picture on the lid is of a Germanic Father Christmas with elves building a cathedral from wooden bricks. The blocks include a pair of columns and two windows. From Mylchreest family of Ballamenaugh, Lonan and Ballaharra, German. There is a faint pencil inscription on the underside in a child's hand: 'Alfie Kneen 10 Strand [?] Street, Douglas, Isle of Man.'

Ann Mylchreest owned Ballaharra (part of late husband's estates) and the Great Clay Case/ Ballaharra Clay Case was taken to the Chancery Court, Castletown (1867) and to the Privy Council, London to uphold the right of Manx customary freeholders to the clay and sand deposits under their farms - a right which had been challenged by the British Crown (who lost their case).
