Ballakaighen axehead
Date made: Iron Age
Description: This beautiful piece of red flint comes from Antrim in Northern Ireland, but it was excavated from a roundhouse farmstead at Ballakaighen in Arbory here in the Isle of Man. It is not known whether the flint was made into an axehead before or after it arrived on the island.
Prehistoric axeheads come in all shapes and sizes, some were held in the hand, others had wooden handles attached. They were multi-purpose tools, used to perform a variety of tasks and many were also very attractive objects.
