H.M.S. Bounty, Iron Object
Date made: 18th century
Description: Piece of iron, said to be part of the anchor of the 'Bounty'. HMS Bounty was captained by Lieutenant William Bligh, formerly of Douglas, with two other Douglas residents Fletcher Christian and Peter Heywood as Master's Mate and Midshipman respectively. After seizing the Bounty and putting Bligh adrift in an open boat, Christian took the Bounty back to Tahiti where he left Heywood and others, and sailed on to Pitcairn Island, where the Bounty was destroyed.
Although from Cumberland, which is just across the sea from the Isle of Man, Fletcher Christian was related to the Christian family of Milntown near Ramsey and maintained links with the Island. Peter Heywood was born at the Nunnery, Douglas.
