Cotton Framed Medallion Quilt

Date made: 1880-1899

Place made: Castletown

Description: A cotton framed medallion quilt with a printed Manx three legs design (triskelles) in the centre; the three legs may have been cut from a flag or a souvenir handkerchief. The three legs design is surrounded by a circular border of hexagons. This central design is then surrounded by a band of log cabin squares set as diamonds and a band of crazy patchwork. On two sides of the quilt is a hexagon border of rosettes or 'Grandmother's Garden'. The whole quilt has a border of red scalloped edging. The variety of fabrics suggests the maker had access to a sample book as several of the fabrics show the same pattern but in different colour ways; this is particularly obvious in the inner band of squares. The quilt is rich in colour particularly red, greens and blues. Most of the fabrics are floral prints, with some plain, striped and checked fabrics.

This quilt was made by Mrs Bickerstaff of Castletown nee Hannah d'Arnoult (Dernoult), formerly a seamstress at Liverpool Bluecoat School.
