Claghbane Shield Boss

Date made: Viking: 800-1265

Description: This conical shield boss was found upright. It has a flat top, has a waist above a flat, circular flange and a dent in one side. The remains of two of the original six iron fixing nails were still in place. There were traces of iron staining which might be the remains of rivets holding a wooden edge strip, or a covering of leather. The shield was around 560mm diameter and 13mm thick.

Found with sword, spearhead and bead (1980-0398a, 0398c and 0399).
