Crazy Patchwork Quilt

Date made: late 19th century

Description: A small, mainly red and pink crazy patchwork quilt made with silks and satins in a variety of patterns. The patchwork pieces are over-stitched with feather stitch in yellow embroidery silk, as are the edges of the patchwork. The quilt design contains a series of six multicoloured cut-wool pile motifs in an oval pattern. There are large floral shaped motifs at either end of the quilt with four smaller motifs around the centre. The quilt is surrounded by a black silk frill, most since faded to brown.

The quilt is backed with black silk with a border of seven lines of feather stitch between the backing and the frill. The edging is embroidered in yellow, green, pink and pale blue embroidery silks. On the back are also embroidered yellow circles which match the position of the flower shaped motifs on the front of the quilt. These are the points at which the patchwork top and backing are quilted together with yellow embroidery silk.

The quilt was purchased by the donor in the Ramsey mart where she was assured the quilt came from the house of an old Manx lady in Kirk Michael.
