Buttons and Seals
Description: Two lead seals, one metal button (damaged) and two gilt buttons (Commissioner for Northern Lights, uniform cuff buttons). One Northern Lights button has been removed from the uniform buttons collection. From near St Maughold's Well, Maughold Head (from which Sir John Rhys abstracted similar offerings in the nineteenth century). Made by Firmin and Co., London. Possible links to magic, charms or folklore.
Wells and springs were an important part of Manx life. Some held special reverence and were visited on particular days of the year or for their healing properties.
