Knockaloe Camp picture frame
Date made: 1914-1918
Description: A rectangular wooden picture frame, handcarved in bas relief with a domed top with a young woman's head in centre. There are stylised foliate and floral designs on the sides and bottom of the frame with corner bosses and scroll work at the bottom. The frame is made of highly polished mahogany. The picture frame is glazed and has two hooks in the back and cord so it can be hung on the wall. The back panel is hinged and has a small (handmade?) brass hinge.
Made by an internee for donor's father, Mr R. Harrison at Knockaloe Camp, Member of Knockaloe Antiquaries Society.
Internees were held on the Isle of Man in two camps, a requisitioned holiday camp in Douglas and a purpose built camp located at Knockaloe near Peel on the west coast of the Island. These held at their peaks over 4,000 and 23,000 men in some cases for nearly five years between opening in 1914 and final closure in 1919. Over 30,000 men passed through Knockaloe between 1914 and 1917, more than the population of Douglas, the largest town.
