Model of HMS 'Jervis' made by interned Italian sailor

Description: Model of HMS 'Jervis' in a glass case, made by Salvatore Monti at the Metropole Internment Camp, Douglas during the Second World War. Carved in teak and painted battleship grey, on a textured sea base with 'Metropole L Camp Isle of Man Ms' in corner and no. tag 60022. The accompanying letter with specifications and naval history of HMS 'Jervis'.

Monti's Home Office record card (held by the UK National Archives) confirms name and internee number 60022, and records maker's occupation as 'Italian seaman, Angelina Lauro'. This Italian merchant ship was interned at Liverpool on 10 June 1940 when Italy entered the war. ancestry.co.uk has a record of a Salvatore Monti, a sailor aged 27, arriving at New York in 1931 aboard the ship 'Carpenia' having joined the ship at Naples. He had 12 years service and was from southern Italy.
