Carved Building Stone from Widow's House

Description: Sandstone carving from Widow's House, Cambrian Place, Douglas. Relief carving on plaque of an angel holding a scroll, removed when the building was demolished. Inscription 'Founded by Mrs Squib 1833, rebuilt by public subscription 1863. Let thy widows trust in me Jer. XLIX II'.
The 1881 Census showed twelve women resident at Cambrian Place, nine of whom were 'subsisting on charitable relief.'
The building was put up for sale by the Department of Health and Social Security for redevelopment in 1987.
