Quilted Skirt
Date made: mid 19th century
Description: Quilted skirt, black satin, machine quilted in a diamond/lozenge pattern. Lined with heavy cotton/calico, not quilted to top layer. Thick black tape waistband with two large hook and eye fastenings, side opening with pocket on opposite side. Four pleats on front panel and three back panels pleated on waistband. Thick black binding on hem.
Belonged to donor's great-grandmother, Mrs Ann Mylchreest (later Bell) nee Quayle of Ronague (c.1825-1921), worn at Ballaharra, German.

YC note: Ann Quayle (b.1829/ Malew), married William Mylchreest of Ballamenagh Mooar, Lonan (1800-1860) in 1855 and married Henry Wesley Bell of Douglas (1827-1890) in 1879. Ann Mylchreest owned Ballaharra (part of late husband's estates) and the Great Clay Case/ Ballaharra Clay Case was taken to the Chancery Court, Castletown (1867) and to the Privy Council, London to uphold the right of Manx customary freeholders to the clay and sand deposits under their farms - a right which had been challenged by the British Crown (who lost their case).
