View from Port Jack shore with wrecked sailing vessel on rocks

Date made: 1885

Artist: Teare, R.

Description: View from Port Jack shore with wrecked sailing vessel on rocks, one of the three masts is broken. There is a rowing boat full of tourists in the distance, also two sailing yachts, a steamer, the Tower of Refuge and Douglas promenade and headland.

One of a pair of oil paintings by little known maritime artist R. Teare. All his surviving artworks are scenes painted from Manx shores. Probably an amateur local artist, his naïve works provide intriguing and charismatic insights into life in Douglas Bay in the 1880s. Note the early holidaymakers being rowed to shore from the IoMSPCo vessels.
