Date made: late 19th century
Maker: Member of Woodworth Family
Place made: Port St Mary
Description: A woollen and cotton patchwork quilt , the patchwork top is based loosely around a 'framed' pattern, with a large area of random patchwork in the centre of the quilt, made up of rectangles and squares. The patchwork top is mainly plain cotton fabrics, with some tweeds and woollen patches, in striped, plain and checked patterns and a black and white spotted patch in cotton sateen. There are also several patterned patches around the edges of the quilt, in red, green and pale yellow fabrics. These patches are sewn into place with lines of machine stitching, suggesting that they were added after the quilt was originally made, as a repair.
The quilt is backed with a yellow ochre woollen backing which is patched in several places. and pieced comprised striped and plaid woollen fabrics also plain fine wool cloths, also some cotton sateens. The quilt is hand quilted in a zig zag pattern mainly with red woollen thread and yellow woollen thread on one side of the quilt . The quilting is erratic, with some lines in a wave pattern rather than a zig zag pattern and the zig zag lines not always aligning with each other. The quilt is bound with a line of machine stitching in some parts.
The patchwork quilt is from the home of Miss Mona Woodworth, Port St Mary.
