Bass Drum used by Castletown Metropolitan Band

Date made: 1890s

Description: Musical instrument. This bass drum was used by the Castletown Metropolitan Band in the late 19th or early 20th century. The shell is of painted wood (some paint missing). There is one vellum skin missing and one broken one. The shell is decorated with a view of Castle Rushen from Market Square, draped red curtains with gold tassel ropes, 3 legs (triskelion) with motto, 'Metropolitan Silver Prize Band' 'EPH Higham maker 58 Erskine Street, Hulme, Manchester'.

Based in the ancient capital of the Isle of Man, Castletown Metropolitan Silver Band has been in existence since 1896, and in fact actually existed prior to this under a different name.
