David Byrne is a renowned Manx born artist and has lived on the Isle of Man for his whole life. The artist was educated at the Douglas High School for Boys, apprenticing to a local firm where he studied interior decorating, before attending the Douglas School of Art. Byrne paints mostly in watercolours and pastels to depict the Island’s landscapes and seascapes, seeking to capture and celebrate the sense of 'Manxness'.

Handwritten inscription on reverse reads 'Erny Choyrt da MONA DOUGLAS liorish e caarjyn ayns yn cheshaght ghailckagh ayns cooinaghtyn jeh tree fee dblein ayns shirveish chengey ny mayrey Ellan Vannin. In 29 Jerrey Fouyir 1977' (Given to Mona Douglas by her friends in Yn Cheshaght Ghailckagh in memory of sixty years’ service to the Manx language. 29th October 1977).
