Born in Leeds in 1873, Owen Bowen was a British painter, known mostly for his Impressionist style painting of still life and landscapes, which would often depict the Yorkshire countryside with an air of nostalgia. Bowen took night classes in his adolescence with Gilbert Foster, at their local college in Leeds - going on to work as a pottery designer and lithography apprentice before finding his true calling as a painter.
In the early twentieth century, Bowen travelled to Holland, where he painted maritime landscapes and windmill scenes. It was during this time that Bowen also visited the Isle of Man, producing several maritime paintings of the Manx coast on his travels. After returning home, the artist went on to form the Leeds School of Art - which later became known as the Owen Bowen School of Art - and was the head of the school for many years. In 1904, Bowen was elected as a member of Staithes Art Club, and following World War Two, he also became President of the Royal Cambrian Academy - exhibiting his work with them for a number of years. Bowen gained a reputation as one of England’s foremost landscape painters through exhibiting his work with the likes of the Royal Academy and the Walker Art Gallery.
