English-style Pieced Quilt
Date made: late 19th century
Maker: Kaighin, Christian
Description: An English-style pieced patchwork quilt with a diamond pattern in Turkey red cotton (now faded to pink) with a repeated patchwork pattern of squares and rectangles. The patchwork panels contain a variety of cotton prints. The dominant colours appear to have been dark blue, red and white, although they are now extremely faded. The red, pink, white and green floral print fabric is identical to that used in the patchwork quilt, IOMMM: 1994-0266.
The quilt is backed with a white cotton sheet and is hand-quilted in a zig-zag pattern using white cotton thread. The edges are bound with a single line of hand-sewn running stitch in white cotton thread. The quilt does not contain any filling.
This patchwork quilt was made by Christian Kaighin of Rhenass, German in the 1880s-90s.
