Sir Mark Cubbon's uniform coat
Date made: early 19th century
Description: Sir Mark Cubbon's uniform coat. Red with swallow tails. Moth damage, left sleeve badly torn and missing decorative cuff, left tailpiece also torn and missing end decoration, lining torn inside collar. Major General's insignia on one swallow tail (other missing). Two holes in left breast for decoration to be mounted. (The epaulets are accessioned separately as 1954-1216.)
Worn by Cubbon whilst governor of Mysore in India, in 1857. He is famous for having kept the province largely peaceful whilst the Indian Mutiny raged through states to the north. Cubbon Park in Mysore is still named after him and an equestrian statue is also believed still to be present there.
